The Drop Spot grew out of a partnership between Farmers Market and Recycling Alternative to piggy back food scraps collection for apartments on the existing traffic of Farmers Market shoppers who are heading to the market each Saturday to make local, sustainable choices about their food.
And these droppers are in good company. A similar pilot was started in April in New York City, and based on the success of over 8000 lbs of food scraps being collected weekly from 8 farmers markets around Manhattan, the New York project has been extended to run through to the end of the year!
As we had expected, the demographic of West End Farmers Market shoppers is fast becoming a demographic of dedicated ‘droppers’. They are thrilled to have an alternative to dumping their food scraps in the landfill and are dropping by our Food Scraps Drop Spot in droves!
In the first 2 Saturdays of collection, we had almost 225 drops from people using buckets, bags and bowls to keep over 1000lbs of food waste out of the landfill.
Indeed West End Apartment residents are hungry for food scraps recycling. If you’re in an apartment downtown, we encourage you to check out our weekly Drop Spot until Oct 15.
