ASTM Certified Biodiesel
As innovators in recycling for over 20 years, Recycling Alternative is still ahead of the curve. We are amongst the first commercial fleets in Canada to fuel our diesel trucks with 100 per cent (B100) BIODIESEL, a clean-burning fuel derived from renewable, recycled organic waste. Direct emissions from biofuels are considered by Climate Smart to be carbon neutral in the long run because they are part of the short-term carbon cycle. As a transportation-oriented operation, biodiesel has played a crucial role in Recycling Alternative's commitment to reduce our footprint on the planet.

Recycling Alternative and the Vancouver Biodiesel Co-Op
When Alex Day and Rob Miller founded the Vancouver Biodiesel Co-op in 2003, Recycling Alternative volunteered to host their pump — and joined as the Co-Op's first member.
Once we started fuelling our trucks with biodiesel, the Co-op's small supply at the time couldn't meet our demands, so, for a short period of time, we started making our own biofuel — collecting waste oil from our existing restaurant clients.
In 2005, Recycling Alternative took over management of the Co-Op, and we shipped in fully-certified ASTM recycled biodiesel.
The tank was upgraded from 500L to 4,000L in 2008 with a new cardlock system giving 24-hour access to the Co-Op's members. Today, Recycling Alternative remains the Co-Op's largest member, and we're proud to host Vancouver's only source of B100 biodiesel.
Commercial Fleets
Volume discounts are offered for commercial fleets wishing to run their vehicles on high blends of Biodiesel.
The Vancouver Biodiesel Co-op is the only source of B100 (100 per cent Biodiesel) in the Lower Mainland.
Environmental benefits of switching to Biodiesel include significantly improved air quality and lowered CO2 emissions. Making the commitment to Biodiesel gives a positive message about your company's environmental stewardship and leadership.

*Important information for using B100 in colder weather:
B100 from recycled tallow and waste vegetable oil have high cloud points.
This is when biodiesel begins to gel.
We put the ASTM specs of each batch on our cardlock pedestal.
We are currently testing with additives for our winter blend to reduce gelling.
RUNNING ON B100 IN COLD WEATHER IS NOT RECOMMENED. Biodiesel will generally begin gelling at temps below 10ºC. To use Biodiesel below this temperature, heating must occur to prevent gelling or additives can be used to reduce the gelling point. We have a tank heater for cooler monthly temperatures and we are working on additives for a winter blend that will alleviate this issue.
